Thoughts on the 30th 1974 FHS reunion

This 30th Reunion is Now Behind Us.
I have other things to do with my life. Maybe in a few days or weeks, I'll return to this site but for now, this is me, signing off.

I went to Jones Beach today with my daughter and two of her friends; we spent about five hours there. Blue sky and pounding surf. Field 6 is very convenient, with the parking right there against the beach. We used to go to Field 4 in the olden days, but that was such a trek from the parking lot to the sand.
Fantastic weather, simply fantastic. I'll post some photos of the beach later.
Next: The Inn on Main in Farmingdale.

Hey, this is it, the last week before the big event(s). I scouted the parking fields today and Field #6 looks to be the best location to meet.
We will meet Saturday morning at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field #6. Drive straight across the parking lot from where you drove in... and we'll gather ON THE BEACH right there. As people come in, we can migrate down to the water.
Question: what if it rains?
Answer: Hey, this is the beach, you're supposed to get wet!
Ok, if we have thunder and lightning storms, we'll have to do something else, but that's not likely.
See you all there!

Yesterday I received an e-mail from JoanTuttSeashell@aol.com. They are having their 1964 40th year reunion on October 23, 2004. You can read about it at their reunion web site, http://www.dalers.com.
Like this reunion, they are doing it by themselves, and not using "a professional planning company". What an innovative idea.

Today I posted my personal phone number at the reunion web site, at the top of the "password protected" page. Call me...

Hi, Emil,
I regret to say that I won't be able to attend the reunion. I have to make two trips east this summer (one for my in-laws' 50th wedding anniversary; one for my mom's 70th birthday party), and just can't afford a third trip in so short a time.

Today, I received two e-mail announcements from the "former class officers" via Classmates.com. They announced a "prior planning committee" selected Reunions of America and that the "official" reunion is July 9, 2004. There was no mention of cost, but we know it will cost each attendee around $100 - that's One Hundred Dollars per person.
Its really "not about the money" -- but wouldn't you rather spend much less and have twice as much fun? Vote with your wallet.

I received an e-mail from Donna Davis (Libraire) today:
From: Donna Davis (Libraire)
To: Emil
Subject: Re: Thanks for signing up on the "blog"!
Date: Tue, 30 Mar 2004 19:22:24 -0500
Emil, I recently got information from "Reunions of America" on July 9th Reunion.
Is the July 4th weekend Reunion still on?
My answer is, OF COURSE we're going to have the reunion on July 3 and 4. I honestly believe that the other reunion scheduled in July as a result of THIS reunion's determination to have a summer get together. They have always scheduled their reunions for Thanksgiving time in the past.

Newsday (arguably the "only" Long Island newspaper) listed our reunion again this past Sunday. We have more folks signing up - great!

By the way, I am a "gold member" of Classmates.com. You have to be a member to send e-mail messages to anyone registered there. If you would like me to contact another 1974 class member registered on Classmates, please let me know. I'll pass your message along and let them know how to reach you.
To answer a question "Will there be 2 reunions": Yes. Don't worry, don't fret. Reunions of America is having theirs, and we're having ours. There is no penalty for attending this one, that one, or neither one. (If I could only attend one, I know which one I would go to.)

Emil here. I want to make something clear: I am not charging for my time or my services. The only expenses that people will have, are their own expenses for whatever events they choose to attend.
- July 3, 2004: Jones Beach State Park charges $8.00 to park, during "peak time". Permit application pending.
- July 3, 2004: Restaurant: I am looking for a concensus on this one. "The Inn on Main" seems a good choice. Suggestions?

The FHS 30th Reunion is to be held on two days, July 3 and July 4, 2004. That is definite.
From my experience and my wife Cynthia's friend's experience with their recent 30th reunion (1973-2003), many people want more than one opportunity to meet. Since we don't have to pay Reunions of America to manage the reunion, we can therefore afford to have more than one "meeting".
By the way, I like nametags, if they are easy to read. I will make legible nametags and paste our photos (actual-size class b&w yearbook pictures) on the nametags. At no charge.

For those of us living out of town, a definate date needs to be set very soon. There is vacation time from work & travel plans that will have to be made. I will need to do this by Feb 1st. Is July 3rd a definate date?
My wife Cynthia just attended her "informal" 30th reunion in Farmingdale tonight. They had a blast. No "stinking nametags", just old friends and good conversation. I'm going to scout out the place (The Inn on Main Street) and see what its like. Learned about it from Fdale.com.

Welcome to those of you have signed up to attend the less formal 30th reunion in 2004.
Here's what I propose for the 2004 Reunion:
1) Meet on July 3 at "the beach": Jones Beach State Park.
2) Meet again at "The Inn on Main Street" in Farmingdale that night, July 3.
3) Meet yet again at Bethpage State Park on July 4, 2004.
4) Take digital and 35mm photos at all of the occasions, and then post them on the web site that I've created for us. For free. You like the photos? Download them and have them printed at your leisure.
5) Distribute a list of everyone who wants to be included, by e-mail, of everyone's name, street address and e-mail address.
I would like others to contribute to this blog and get a conversation going. If you want to write here, but don't know how, ask me and I'll explain how to logon to this (or any other) blog.

Reunions of America mailed my wife a letter yesterday, giving October 2003 as the month for their 30th reunion. That reunion will be held at a hotel on Long Island, and the cost to attend will be $96.00 per person.
How does this sit with you? What are your feelings about their choice of month, the cost, the choice of using a hotel? I'm asking for reference - we're talking about the 1973 reunion here.

My wife Cynthia graduated FHS in 1973. Reunions of America contacted her a few months ago, and gave January 1, 2003 as a tentative date for their reunion.

Welcome to the FHS Class of 1974 blog, dedicated to discussing issues about the 30th Reunion in 2004.
Please visit 2004Reunion to register for the reunion set up by volunteers. There is another site dedicated to the "formal" reunion, hired by the class officers. You may register with that group at Classmates.com. Please tell them that Emil Wisekal referred you.
And if you learn something (beyond their tentative January 1, 2004 Reunion date) please let us know here. Thanks!
